About BMI
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or ethnicity. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass rather than body fat.
What should I do with my BMI result?
Use your BMI as a starting point for understanding your weight status. For a complete health assessment, consult with a healthcare provider who can consider other factors like waist circumference, diet, physical activity, and family history.
How We Calculate Your BMI
The Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
For imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs ÷ height in inches²) × 703
Example Calculation
For a person who is 70 kg and 175 cm tall:
- • Height in meters: 175 cm ÷ 100 = 1.75 m
- • Height squared: 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625 m²
- • BMI: 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9
Healthy Weight Range
We calculate your healthy weight range by finding the weights that would give you a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, which is considered the normal/healthy range by the World Health Organization.
