About Ideal Body Weight
What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is the weight that is believed to be maximally healthful for a person, based primarily on height. Several formulas have been developed over the years to estimate IBW.
Why are there different formulas?
Different researchers have developed various formulas based on different populations and methodologies. We show results from four well-known formulas to give you a range of estimates.
Limitations
These formulas don't account for body composition, muscle mass, bone density, age, or ethnicity. They provide a general guideline but shouldn't be the only factor in determining your health goals. Consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
How We Calculate Your Ideal Weight
We use four established formulas to calculate ideal body weight. All formulas use height in inches over 5 feet (60 inches) as the variable. Results are shown in your selected unit.
Robinson Formula (1983)
Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Miller Formula (1983)
Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet
Devine Formula (1974)
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Hamwi Formula (1964)
Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet
Your Range
The range we display shows the minimum and maximum values from all four formulas, with the average calculated from all results. This gives you a realistic target range rather than a single number.
